The Eagle and Unknown

February 20, 2011

The Eagle

I really enjoyed this flick. There is nothing better than discovering a movie is much better than you expected.  I have put up with so many bad sword and sandal flicks in my day. I couldn’t wait to see Troy…It sucked. Alexander slightly hurt my soul. Timeline blew…I’ve bought it twice though. I’ve always wondered how these movies can be bad? People killing other people with swords seems easy enough to do. The Eagle gets it right.

The plot centers around two dudes going deep into Scotland to find a golden eagle in order to reclaim family honor. Cool stuff. Any excuse for people to fight with swords I love. The combat in the beginning of the film is some of the most technical and exciting I’ve seen. The battles are extremely well done.

Sidenote: I know nothing about combat…but this seemed pretty real.

This movie is a sword and sandal bromance. The landscapes are beautiful and the movie is very smart and fun. I liked that is was more of a character study than action film. Channing Tatum does a good job in this film and Jamie Bell carries the rest of the scenes. I like Bell a lot as an actor. I hope he finally gets his name noticed with the Spielberg/Jackson flick The Adventures of Tin Tin

Watch the movie Centurion on Netflix then go and check this film out. It is a nice surprise.

Watch out Harrison Ford. Liam Neeson now throws the best movie punch. He also is the new go to guy when Hollywood needs a middle-aged man who can kick ass and date women half his age.

This movie revolves around ?terrorists, CIA, Hitmen? who have way too much time on their hands. the intricacies needed to set this plot boggle the mind. I kept thinking about Scott Evil from Austin Powers. I wondered “Why don’t you just take a gun and shoot them?” Everything would be made much easier.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed this movie for the supporting characters. Diane Kruger is always solid and Bruno Ganz is fun as the saucy/secretive old man who still has a few tricks up his sleeve.  Bruno’s scene with Frank Langella was the highlight of the film.

If you are willing to forgo logic and not ask many questions Unknown is a fun flick that goes by quickly.

    1. What is your take on Prince of Persia….Sandals: Check, Swords: Check, Substance: ???

    2. I’d beware of an old Nazi turned PI every day of the week…that guy is a great character.

Both of them are fun movies! 🙂
