July Movie Preview Part 1
July Preview
By John Leavengood
Captain America
Release Date: July 22
Cast: Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Stanley Tucci, Tommy Lee Jones
The beautiful thing about this movie is that men will have no problem dragging their girlfriends to see this. I don’t claim to understand what women find attractive, but I imagine that Chris Evans without a shirt with a shaved chest like he was in a Gillette ad is just the ticket. Seeing him in the trailer makes me want to do more push-ups. Piled high with The Incredible Hulk, Thor and the Iron Man franchise, this First Avenger flick looks promising. If this turns out like Green Lantern (https://moviesfilmsandflix.wordpress.com/2011/06/25/green-lantern/) I might cry.
Trailer:
The Ward
Release Date: July 8
Cast: Amber Heard and a bunch of loony young girls in a shower.
Oh, yeah. Psycho-Girl, Interrupted has got a shower scene. Any excuse to sneak a boob into a horror flick right, John Carpenter? I shouldn’t tease. Carpenter has done some great work. But honestly, this looks mediocre at best and, more likely, regrettable unless you’re a gung-ho horror hound like me who sees everything. Best case scenario: high production value married with clever use of sound effects, camera angles, and a creeped out CGI insane she-ghost may lead to a few jumps.
Friends with Benefits
Release Date: July 22
Cast: Justin Timberlake, Mila Kunis
I’ve been looking forward to this one. Ever since I heard J. T. was starring in No Strings Attached Part II—I mean, Friends with Benefits…whatever. This looks charming. Mixing these two is smart casting for covering the budget spread. But the trailer offers more laughs than I expected. I just wonder if they’re going to go all Break-Up on us when it “gets real” at the end. I hope not. Let’s pray for some Summer RomCom feel-good uppetiness!
Cowboys and Aliens
Release Date: July 29
Cast: Harrison Ford, Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde
When I first saw the preview for this I nearly pissed myself. I thought I was in the middle of a ComicCon fanboy’s wet dream. Cowboys…and aliens…in the same movie…really? Anyway, the budget looks good. The actors look good. Jon Favreau took the director’s chair and I feel that he can certainly deliver good summer action movies. The stars could be aligned for something special.
Devil’s Double
Release Date: July 29
Cast: Bunch of near Easterners.
Anyone looking for their summer dose of badass should buy a ticket for this one. Based on this trailer, I’d say it’s geared up to be one of the coolest movies of the year; the movie you can’t stop talking about. I wonder if the trailer intentionally avoided brutal scenes, or if the brutality is tactfully circumvented. The preview has Personal Jesus playing in the background and it is all too ironically fitting.
