Mark’s DVD Round Up

June 29, 2011

Cedar Rapids

Ed Helms is an incredibly likable person in this film. He plays a nice character who has never left his home town. This doesn’t make him dumb, naive or close minded. It just makes him a simple nice guy. However, things change when he goes to the city that never sleeps…..Cedar Rapids.

The movie is helped by John C. Reilly, Anne Heche and Isiah Whitlock Jr. (who was in The Wire and does a great impersonation of Omar Little).  They have faults and do things I would never do but they still stay grounded and never fall into caricature. That is all I need in a movie. A likable lead character, a simple story and supporting characters who seem real. Rent it. Like it.

Sin Nombre

I really dug this film. It won’t make you happy but it gives you a glimpse into another world.  It doesn’t reach the greatness levels of City of God but it is a confident directorial debut.

Looks and sounds amazing. Should have been a great ride. However, it is hindered by a lame/cliched script and underwritten characters.

I had REALLY high hopes for this film. I ignored the reviews and was hoping for some great flooded underground cave action. Didn’t happen. Still bummed. You should watch The Descent instead.

The Rite

1. Incredibly monotone/boring guy loses faith.

2. Enjoyably scenary chewing guy gets possessed by a demon.

3. Boring guy regains faith.

4.  The movie ends.

Jackass 3.5

Fun Stuff. The good part about watching Jackass on DVD is that you can fast forward through all the incredibly gross stunts like Enema long jump.
