The Avengers

May 6, 2012

The Avengers is a wonderful gamble that paid off. Marvel has done just about everything right in the build up to this film. They were patient, established a brand and marketed each film like they were massive events.

The Avengers is an event. A collection of big names coming together to make stuff blow up. Joss Whedon is the capable captain who navigated this massive ship through icebergs, mine fields and gigantic egos. Whedon managed to create a fantastic film full of humor, heart and epic moments.

What I loved most about this film was Loki. He is a perfect bad guy for the Avengers.

My friend Tony 9.5 said this about Tom Hiddleston’s Loki:

“Loki is a moronic master manipulator with no particular plan. Perfect bad guy.”

I love how Loki can be deadly and dumb at the same time. He never realizes the flaws of his plans he just wants his name on billboards and face on statues. This is a minor spoiler but I wanted to share a scene that perfectly encapsulates Loki as a villain. Hawkeye shoots an arrow and Loki catches it. Loki smiles at the arrow and has a look of arrogance and confidence. However, the arrow explodes sending him flying onto the Stark tower in a blaze of flame and hair. Loki is foiled by his own arrogance.

Every character in this film gets a moment that perfectly sums up their characters. It never feels gratuitous. It feels genuine when Downey Jr. calls Hawkeye “Legolas” or Thor “Point Break.” Scarlett Jo fits right in with all the dudes and works well with Renner’s Hawkeye

My favorite duo is Captain America and Iron Man. They are completely different yet they find themselves constantly working together. They are the heart and soul of this movie.

Mark Ruffalo smashes and steals the show. His Hulk is perfect amounts nerdy, confident and aware of his skills. Marvel has finally gotten Hulk right. The third time is a charm. I can’t wait to see what Marvel does with him in the future.

I don’t want to spoil anything else about this movie. It is a legitimate event and will break countless box office records because people will want to watch it over and over. I can’t wait to watch this movie again. I love it when a plan comes together!

Watch The Avengers, Watch Hulk smash. Viva la Whedon!

Sidenote: The movie cost $220 milion to make. It will have made $500 million worldwide by the end of this weekend. It will clear one billion easily.
