The MFF podcast is back and we are talking about Baby Driver. Director Edgar Wright has done it again and created a beautifully original film that has miraculously made $100 million at the worldwide box office. It is an absolute delight (lots of hyperbole) and we go in depth into the soundtrack, production and general awesomeness that is Baby Driver.

MFF Special: Figuring Out How the Geologist Got Lost in Prometheus

Do you ever wonder how Fifield the geologist got lost in Prometheus? I sure have, so I decided to come up with some answers that will shed light on the plot hole. The point of this post isn’t to dogpile on a film that I enjoy. The end goal is to figure out how two people got lost when they probably shouldn’t of.  Like all my other posts about Deep Blue Sea, Halloween H20: 20 Years Later and The Cabin in the Woods I’ve done a ton of work and research to make an educated guess that I’m happy with.

If you aren’t familiar with Prometheus it tells the story of space explorers dying violently while Guy Pearce wears old man makeup. I have very fond memories of my first viewing. My wife and I went to a local restaurant for our customary after movie drinks and we ended up having a very nice bartender who went heavy with the free drinks. We proceeded to go way in-depth in an effort to figure out the timeline and the Architects plan. I can’t remember the last time I’ve spent so much time breaking down a film’s plot.

Here is how it all goes down. The doomed crew land on an alien planet in search of life and find some ominous looking structures. The ship lands about 2,000 feet from the structure and they ride to the death trap in some sweet ATVs, then walk into the circular dome and send out some orbs to map the area.

When you look at the clip and picture you will notice that the orbs start traveling parallel to each other in straight line.

The tomb area is in the middle of these two tunnels.

Once inside the building (30:44), they take a left (32:00), then take a right and walk until they come to a watery area that features obvious terraforming (32:28). They take a look, remove their helmets, turn back and walk down the very long tunnel that could possibly lead them to the other end. If the structure is 2,300 feet long and the tomb is in the middle that means the crew has a maximum of 1,150 feet to walk before they arrive in the middle. This makes sense because the tunnel they are walking in looks a little longer than a 100-yard football field. Eventually, David (Michael Fassbender) triggers some holographic Architects (alien dudes) who come running through the tunnel and take a right towards the tomb area. The crew follows (36:02) and they come across a decapitated architect laying next to a massive door.

This is when Fifield gets pissed, says something about rocks and storms away from the group with dopey Millburn in tow. The irony is they end up back in the same area and meet their demise via a rapidly growing snake thing.  All they had to do was take a left, walk down a long tunnel, take another left and eventually take one more very noticeable right. There was basically zero reason for them to get lost so I’m going to come up with a possible route that he could’ve taken to get himself killed. For reference, here is a diagram of the easy trek they made. 

Fifield wasn’t thinking straight and decided to take a left turn too early despite Millburn meekly suggesting they should go a little further. They get to the end of the hallway and take a left. They end up walking up the parallel hallway and this is why they don’t hear the other crew running to their ATVs. Here is how the conversation goes.

Millburn: Are you sure we’re going the right way?

Fifield: Yes

Millburn: Shouldn’t we just follow the long tunnel that lead us to the dead alien guy?

Fifield: Nope

Millburn: Really?

Fifield: Yes! Trust me! I know exactly where I’m going.

It takes a minute for the crew to get back to the ship and realize the two are missing. Fifield and Millburn are called on their comms and told to stay inside because a massive storm is coming (convenient). They’re informed of movement underground via their captain and wisely decide to go the other way. The problem is they walk around in circles and end up back at the tomb. This is where they meet their end.

They cover a lot of unecessary ground whilst gettting lost.

The reason the Fifield died is because he is a stubborn fellow who wouldn’t listen to his buddy (in a fake conversation). All they had to do was take two lefts and a right and they were guaranteed to live a little bit longer and not become a punch line.

MFF Special: Analyzing the Critical/Audience Scores of Kurt Russell’s Movies

We here at MFF are big Kurt Russell fans and if you’ve been following us for a while you’ve probably read a lot of Russell posts and know he is a constant topic in our podcast. In my quest to put together the most random compilation of weird data-centric posts I had to include Russell’s films. I recently took a deep dive into his filmography and collected all the critical/audience scores for all of his films since 1980. I wanted to know which Russell films audiences (IMDb) and critics (RT) love most. Do they like mustachioed/bearded Russell? Do they like sleeveless shirt Russell? Are they fans of Elvis Russell? Of course, there is zero correlation or causation in regards to whether or not a bearded Russell will make a film better. This post simply points out random facts and gives you something to talk about at the water cooler.

Before we move along with the post here are my top five Russell flicks. You need to watch them

  1. Big Trouble in Little ChinaJack Burton is the best action hero ever
  2. The Thing – Perfect horror film
  3. Tombstone – Great mustache
  4. Escape From New York – Snake is the best
  5. Miracle – Dude can act.

I decided to go with his films dating back from 1980 because the majority of his pre-1980 movies don’t have Rotten Tomatoes scores. My random data needs actual data to be so random! Take a look at his IMDb page to see which films are included on the list.

Take a look at Russell’s top 10 films according to critic/audience combined averages.

  • 10. Swing Shift/Tombstone – 75.5
  • 9. The Hateful Eight – 76
  • 8. Furious 7  – 76
  • 7. Miracle – 77.5
  • 6. Big Trouble in Little China – 77.5
  • 5. Deepwater Horizon – 78
  • 4. Escape From New York – 78.5
  • 3. Bone Tomahawk – 80.5
  • 2. Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 2 – 81
  • 1. The Thing – 82

There are some great films on the list and they led me to a startling conclusion (somewhat hyperbole). Movies that feature a bearded/mustachioed Russell have the highest combined average score (78.8). The Thing, Bone Tomahawk. Deepwater Horizon, The Hateful Eight, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Tombstone all feature Russell crushing some sweet facial hair.

Here is a breakdown of the various sub-genres of Russell films.

  2. Superhero Dad Russell – 74.25% (Guardians 2, Sky High)

I am still certain that Russell’s mustache in The Hateful Eight helped form the jacket he wears throughout the movie.

I can’t say with 100% certainty that the facial hair didn’t make a difference. I can say that it helps working with Quentin Tarantino, Peter Berg and John Carpenter.  I  thought that his sleeveless shirt movies (Captain Ron, Tango & Cash, Escape From New York/L.A., Overboard, Big Trouble in Little China) would have the highest average but they were hindered by the really bad scores of Captain Ron and Tango & Cash. I am happy that Superhero Dad Russell took second place. If you haven’t watched Sky High and want to see Bruce Campbell and Kurt Russell in a film together do it now.

The bottom line is that Kurt Russell is the best. The guy has been making great films for a long time and I love that between The Fate of the Furious and Guardians Vol. 2 he has starred in two of the biggest 2017 films. If you want to start somewhere I totally recommend checking out The Thing because it is perfection.

John’s Horror Corner: We Love Selfies (2017), Independent Short Film Review.

MY CALL:  This film is for those who want a front seat to the lab bench watching filmmakers experiment and discover their skills.  Because, at first, no one is winning a Nobel Prize or getting rich with their first 10-minute, low budget film.  This is not for mainstream horror buffs, but for the more holistic genre fan who wants to sample the styles and flavors filmmakers have to offer the genre.

PREMISE: With an escaped killer on the loose, a babysitter enjoys a quiet nice texting her boyfriend.  Here’s a link to the TRAILER, which doesn’t really give us anything outside of the expectation of something like a killer clown named Giggles.

Disclaimer: This review was solicited by the filmmakers (@MyLittleRascal1 on Twitter) and/or producers who provided privileged access to the film. However, my opinion remains unbiased as I was neither hired nor paid to produce this critical review, nor do I have an investment stake in the film. The only condition to access was that the review be SPOILER FREE.

Whether engaging the teaser/trailer or the first few minutes of the film, it’s immediately evident that the cinematography/photography direction, sound editing, general camerawork and acting are proficient, but with skills not yet honed.

At this point I feel the need to remind viewers that most short films are more like experiments; these are not the final canvased masterpiece, but workings from an artist’s sketchbook before she decided to use the more expensive film, actors, pre-production staff and means, etcetera. It’s sad that such glimpses into indie films often beget negative criticism from folks who just don’t realize that often only a few people (in this case, Roger Glass and Joseph Sorrentino) share the numerous duties of sound mixing, editing, direction, writing, and that—for many of them—it is the dawn of their career as they’re just finding their feet. Even the greatest weaponsmith’s blade must sharpen itself on a whetstone, and that’s exactly what these early films are: the whetstone.

One thing I quite liked about the editing was the use of a snapshot sound with each early cut. A nice stylish complement to the film’s theme. It reminded me of the raw 70s polaroid clang in the newer Texas Chainsaw films.

The staging of the premise is rather generic and classically troped.  Consider this a color-by-numbers so the filmmakers can show you they understand how to use all the tools in the filmmakers’ toolbox.  We have an escaped crazy killer on the loose, a babysitter, a scared child, and news flashes.

Shots like this, audiences of stuffed animals in the rooms of scared children, is actually a standard trope I’ve come to love.

The use of the phone texting harkens to Hush (2016), additionally to When a Stranger Calls (1979, 2006)—it’s an invitingly playful trope I enjoy.  The special effects (make-up, wounds) are obviously imperfect, but make a great effort with obvious financial constraints.  As for the acting, the clown (Barry Tangert) and babysitter (Corrie Graham) did notably well with their roles.  Lastly, the “selfie” title/theme is more gimmicky than appropriate, but gimmicky is quite important in the horror business and, when employed properly, brings smiles to fans.  This is something I’d want to see explored more in the early scenes of a feature length film.

So, what’s the verdict?  Well, this isn’t a film I’d tell a horror fan to watch for the sake of seeing a horror film.  Rather this is the film I’d tell someone to watch if they want a skillset preview from folks who may in the future do the next theatrical insane slasher film.  And I’d watch that film.  There were plenty of stylish additions herein that would stir flavor into the otherwise gory stew of a conventional slasher flick.

John’s Horror Corner: The Belko Experiment (2016), Office Space with a chunky slathering of Texas Chainsaw Massacre gore.

MY CALL:  A brutal horror film driven more by characters than gory backseat shock tactics.  But make no mistake, the brutal gore is there, too.  MORE MOVIES LIKE The Belko ExperimentSome reviewers have compared this to the likes of Would You Rather (2012), Cheap Thrills (2013), 13 Sins (2014) or Battle Royale (2000).  Sure, there are similarities, but I largely disagree.  Fans of Belko should instead turn to the mania-driven films The Mist (2007) or The Experiment (2010).

Disclaimer: This blu-ray was sent to me by a publicist from FOX along with some free Belko paraphernalia gifts in hopes that I would review the movie—probably to rally interest for the DVD release.  However, I was not paid to write this nor were there any conditions to my receiving this package.

Clearly demonstrative of the low corporate overhead of running an overseas business, opening shots of Bogota, Colombia’s city streets introduce us to some of our office drones much in the same fashion as did Office Space (1999). Our displaced Americans work for a non-profit company specializing in—again, ironically to the tune of Office Space—facilitating the hiring of American personnel to overseas businesses; an outsourced company specializing in facilitating outsourcing personnel.

Now I’m not sure if it’s my age or the fact that I love The Replacements (2000) that I even noticed this, but the irony continues to rain down thick as our Belko employees stroll into work and the scene is scored by a Spanish language rendition of “I Will Survive.”  LOL.  Way to set the mood as our smiling office workers arrive to their daily grind.  But quite contrary to the drab cubicle Hell of Office Space, Belko boasts a gorgeously manicured corporate-chic environment, rich with all the corporate perk trim.

The work day begins with some banterous levity from Mike (John Gallagher Jr.; Hush, 10 Cloverfield Lane), evading overzealous oversharer’s family vacation photo assaults, pleasant office friends naming their ant farm ants, a bit of flirting, and playful relationship gossip.  Among the staff we find the boss Barry (Tony Goldwyn; Ghost, The Last House on the Left), Leandra (Adria Arjona; True Detective, Pacific Rim: Uprising), Bud (Michael Rooker; The Walking Dead, Slither), the pot-smoking rationalist Marty (Sean Gunn; Guardians of the Galaxy Vols. 1-2, Tromeo and Juliet), and Office Space’s own Wendell (John C. McGinley; Stan Against Evil, Identity).  Everyone seems happy to be there and the tone of the film is expertly cast before pulling the carpet out from under us.

But the fun and games come to an end when the building seals everyone inside of a steel trap and an announcement prompts that if two people are not dead in 30 minutes, there will be “repercussions.”  Some remain of rational mind and humane heart, others not so much.  As things get dire, morals tend to degenerate, don’t they?  Just as we saw in The Mist (2007).  Like a murderously flowered spring meadow on a windy day, undesirable personality traits pollinate mass hysteria.

Most of the effects are well-executed, abruptly brutal blood splatters.  But we also enjoy a fair share of skull-crushing, face-collapsing scenes.  You know, some awesomely “Chainsaw Massacre slaughterhouse” chunky gore.  The gore is visceral, and the atmosphere makes us feel it unrelentingly harder.

Director Greg McLean (Rogue, Wolf Creek 1-2, The Darkness) and writer James Gunn (Slither, Guardians of the Galaxy Vols. 1-2) kindly paved our character introductions with a sort of daily humanity.  After all, we don’t want to see anything bad happen to the guy who named an ant farm ant to make his co-worker laugh.  We meet a staff of nice people… but they don’t stay nice.  Fear breeds desperation—and incentive.

I actually understand why this didn’t rock the box office.  It’s not that kind of film.  But it’s a good one, worthy of your attention; worthy of a lot of attention.  McLean and Gunn are attentive to their characters, and it is their characters—and not their death scenes or the hunt—that make this film work.  But, oooooooh, that chunky gore is just the icing on this fleshy cake.

The 25 Greatest Cinematic Americans of the Last 25 Years

The National Treasure gang love this list so much they put lemon juice on the hard copy.

America is an odd place filled with odd people who keep doing what they have to do to stay odd. Our country is a weird place and I wanted this list to resemble the populace. I’ve stayed away from the pretentious and went with my gut in regards to the picks. The following 25 are an eclectic/ficitonal bunch who have made fictional America great.

1. Preacher – Deep Blue Sea

Deepest red, white and bluest my hat is like a shark fin! I changed the words around but LL Cool J’s song for Deep Blue Sea should’ve used those words. Deep Blue Sea is an epic of epic proportions and might just be the greatest American movie ever (total hyperbole). What I love about LL’s character is how he never gives up, is full of wonderful one-liners and continually pushes himself to be a better chef. In the face of adversity the man still wants to make great food.

2. Sheila – The Other Guys

Shelia is a true saint of a woman who tamed a dangerous pimp and helped the world realize that pimps don’t cry.

3. Russell Franklin – Deep Blue Sea

I probably could’ve filled this list with nothing but Sam Jackson characters but I had to just pick one (according to my imaginary rule book) What I love most is how he gets so wrapped up in his big motivational speech that he forgets he is standing next to open water. The guy is so intent on inspiring people that he puts himself in the line of fire. Sam Jackson’s death in Deep Blue Sea is a national treasure and proves saving the day doesn’t always work out.

4. Gene – Wet Hot American Summer

Gene is a straight up weirdo who was totally wrecked by war. However, he found steady employment and eventually learns to embrace his weirdness. Whether he is fondling sweaters or humping refrigerators the guy is a true American.

5. Tracy Flick – Election

Tracy Flick straight up steamrolled folks in Election. She is ambition personified and Reese Witherspoon played her to perfection.

6. Carter Blake – Deep Blue Sea

The dude can ride sharks!

7. Thorny – Super Troopers

Not every man can give two German arrestees impromptu “Mustache rides.” Ramathorn is the glue that ties the Super Troopers together and manages to come across as a solid leader who can balance work, life and maple syrup.

8. Cher – Clueless

On the surface, Cher might seem like a vapid teenager who thinks too highly of herself. However, Cher is basically the best and she wins everyone over. Alicia Silverstone personified charm and her work never gets old.

9. Black Dynamite – Black Dynamite

There is only one man on the planet who Abraham Lincoln’s ghost would help out. That man is Black Dynamite. He is a true American hero who loves Kung-Fu, deductive reasoning and telling children to “hush.”

10. Roman – 2 Fast 2 Furious

What I love most about Roman is how little he has changed throughout the FF movies. The dude started off Roman and is still Roman. He is the crowd pleasing former convict who has begrudgingly become a hero.

11. Monica – Love & Basketball

Sanna Latham should’ve won an Oscar for Love & Basketball.

.

12. Thomas – Smoke Signals

Thomas is a really earnest person who loves telling stories and then telling more stories. He might be the most likable person on this list and he is the reason why Smoke Signals works so well.

13. The Dude – Big Lebowski

Nothing ties a list together like The Dude. Jeff Bridges oozes American swagger and his Dude character is a laid-back charmer who is one of the greatest Americans to ever live on screen.

14. Betty – The Way Way Back

The Way, Way Back is one of the most authentic movies I’ve ever watched because it captures a side of America that is familiar to many people. Allison Janney’s character seems like a drunken mess but she always knows where her kids are and she embraces who she is. While others are ignoring their children she knows exactly where hers are at and even has nicknames for their stupid “dead” dancing.

15. Rico – Hot Rod

Danny McBride is an American legend. The guy is articulate and smart and that is why his dumb characters are so great. They are dumb characters who have a lot more going on under the surface. For instance, only great Americans have dreams like the one Rico describes in the movie.

I’m kinda grumpy today, dude. I didn’t get a lot of sleep last night. I was having those dreams again. Ya know, how it’s just me in a castle and I gotta fight, like, a thousand wizards and the only way to beat them is to punch them as hard as I can in their faces. Then, when I’m done, all their little wizard wives came out and wanted me to have sex with them – which is kinda weird.

16. Christine – Drag Me to Hell

Making it in America can be a tough thing to do. Sometimes the choices we make could potentially piss off a gypsy who in turn curses us with a trip to hell. What matters is what happens when we’ve learned we’ve been cursed. I love how Christine hunkered down and put up a massive fight that saw her beaten, bruised and more bruised.

17. Wendell Everett – The Guard

You know, I can’t tell if you’re really motherfuckin’ dumb, or really motherfuckin’ smart.

The poor guy travels to Ireland, deals with an irascible cop and fight drug dealers. Don Cheadle does the best-annoyed face in the business and I love The Guard

18. Ben Gates – National Treasure

I once had an argument that revolved around National Treasure being an actual National Treasure. It is a beautiful tale of a dude looking for history and conveniently finding it.

Most convenient lemons ever.

19. Gay Perry – Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

Val Kilmer is the best in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. The poor guy has to deal with a motor-mouthed Robert Downey Jr., lots of murder, and his favorite gun being thrown in a pond.

20. Alabama – True Romance

Alabama is a badass. I remember watching True Romance when I was a teenager and thought she was way cooler than Christian Slater because she is the one driving away while he naps at the end. Do not mess with Alabama!

21. The Bride – Kill Bill

The Bride is proof that you can be a murderer, survive an assassination attempt and eventually get revenge on the people who killed your family. What I love most about the Bride is how she holds onto her humanity whilst killing many people. She also wears some sweet killing people outfits.

22. Captain Ron – Captain Ron

Captain Ron is a damn fine man. He doesn’t know what he is doing, but he will always get you close to where you are going. Kurt Russell’s laid back charm saved this film and gave the world a likable hero whom probably should better distinguish the words “gorillas” and “guerillas.”

Caroline Harvey: Captain Ron, I was wondering. Are we going to be going to any more “human” type places?

Captain Ron: Well, you heard of St. Croix?

Caroline Harvey: Yeah.

Captain Ron: We’re going to the island just to the left of it.

Caroline Harvey: What’s it called?

Captain Ron: Ted’s.

23. President Camacho – Idiocracy

Shit. I know shit’s bad right now, with all that starving bullshit, and the dust storms, and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings. But I got a solution.

Terry Crewes is a national treasure and I guarantee Morgan Freeman is annoyed he didn’t land this president role.

24. Megan – Bridesmaids

I love Melissa McCarthy in Bridesmaids. There is more to her than meets the eye and I always love the presence of somebody who is totally at ease with themselves. Her character never goes overboard and in the end is the most sane. She doesn’t feel the need to let everyone know she is rich and somehow predicts that a dude on a plane has a gun hidden somewhere on his body.

25. Han Seoul-oh – Better Luck Tomorrow/Fast and Furious 3,4,5 and 6

The dude started off as a small-time crook who grew into a badass criminal who dated Wonder Woman. Han is a good guy who has traveled the world, stole some stuff and might’ve been killed by Jason Statham. I really liked Tokyo Drift and I think Han is a great representation of the perfect America.

John’s Horror Corner: Burn (2017), Independent Short Film Review.

MY CALL:  Heartfelt horror with endearing characters whose warmth transcends the genre, Burn is the gem you’ve been looking for, made by the people who need to be making more films, and safely steering us clear of exhausting tropes.

Burn (@BurnShortFilm), a short psychological horror film made in Hertfordshire and north London, UK: “After several local disappearances prompt a nationwide manhunt, Burn focusses on Peter and Louise – two of many gripped by media-induced fear. When their son, Charlie, is born, Louise must find a way of raising him amid continuing public hysteria and incomprehensible personal tragedy.

Short films come in all manner of quality and style and, if you review them, you’ve come to learn this the hard way—like desperately sifting river sand in your pan, hoping against hope for that glimmering speck of gold.  So, imagine my relief when I found Burn boasting the skilled camera work and shots of a more learned eye.  The production value is high (until the end when we could feel the budget limitations) and most scenes are crisply executed.  From artistic visuals to simply filming perfunctory tasks, the emotionally powerful first five minutes of this film feel like a montage of technically pleasing filmmaking.  Kudos to director Judson Vaughan and his cinematographer!

I felt particularly edgy watching the “old gritty family tapes” opening sequence.  Between the new trailer for It (2017) and films like Sinister (2012), I’ve come to fear they are signs of bad things to come for the characters in our favorite genre.  However, I’d have liked to see this element more explored in the film.

Kindly playing a father whom his son will never know, Max Cavenham brings a candid compassion to the screen.  His performance, complemented by solid editing work, breathes humanity into this role—and a challenge it certainly is to truly relate to short film characters in such short time.  Playing his wife, Emma Kelly likewise provisions a sincere, lived-in character.  They are real people who say credible things rather than slasher fodder festooned with clichés. Their moments together feel very real, as if you might have warmly shared them with someone in your own life just yesterday.  Again, paramount filmmaking from everyone involved in this.

Not flawless, the second act (i.e., minutes 4 to 9) plods along, feeling like the product of different filmmakers and writers who had to force the plot’s hand a bit.  But, again, with such a short running time this is perhaps simply indicative of the reality that we need some exposition and staging to drive us to the climactic revelation… and that revelation, our third act, found me quite satisfied.  At first it felt quite familiar and a tad campy (which may garner negative criticism from some due to the drastic shift in tone), but then I formed a vast Cheshire smile at the “real” reveal.  Interestingly, it inspired a twisted sort of heartfelt relief…while also murderous! LOL

A patient film highlighting the skills of the entire team on and behind the screen, Burn’s story is the brainchild of www.TheSlaughteredBird.com co-owner, Chris Barnes (@TheBlueTook), and in partnership with Vaughan’s Dragon Egg Media label it was released under production umbrella Slaughtered Bird Films (@SlaughteredBird).  So, I’d like to say thank you to Barnes and Vaughan.  We need more thoughtful horror like this, and more considered characters like these.

If there is a take home message here, the thing I’ll remember most about this film, it actually won’t be the sort of double-twist zinger (which I quite enjoyed).  Nope.  For me it will be Charlie’s endearing father, nervously and meticulously preparing videos for his unborn son with such tender care.  In those show-stealing moments Max Cavenham was brilliant!  So much more than just “great scenes [that happen to be] in a horror movie,” the heart of those opening scenes transcends the genre and would shine in any film of any genre.  Imagine that, real filmmakers making horror.

MFF Special: Tracking the Merman’s Murderous Journey in The Cabin in the Woods

Why did the control center have to be so far away!

Do you ever wonder how long it took the Merman to travel from the elevators to the control room in The Cabin in the Woods? I sure have. After doing an excessive amount of analysis (E.G. pausing to count the number of steps on a staircase) I have an answer that is based on guess work and actual data. Much like my other posts that center around Michael Myers using his blinker, sharks scheming underwater and Leatherface running. I’ve done as much homework as possible to make an educated guess.

If you haven’t watched The Cabin in the Woods, it centers around a bunch of good looking people being killed to satiate the ancient god’s thirst for sacrifices. Helping the Gods are a bunch of office drones who make sure the killing goes off without a hitch. One of the main controllers Hadley (Bradley Whitford) is fascinated by the murderous Merman, who never seems to get picked by the unwitting victims. In true horror comedy fashion, irony strikes when he is killed by the Merman when everything goes wrong.

The problem is the slow moving creature had to crawl its way through long corridors and down some stairs to find his target. Watch this behind the scenes clip to see how slow it moves.

After watching and rewatching various clips from the movie I’ve patched together a likely path the Merman had to take. First, let me start off by telling you that the Merman moves at a very slow pace of 41.25 feet every 60 seconds. Basically, it reaches out one of its arms, and pulls itself forward very slowly. The most curious thing about the Merman is that there is no blood on its body when it finally attacks Hadley. Thus, it must’ve stayed away from the chaos and not murdered anyone because he is really clean. Here is the initial attack

I believe the Merman was one of the first creatures to be delivered by the elevators, because it didn’t have to crawl through the insane amounts of blood. It exited the elevator and made its way through roughly 264 feet of corridors on the 100 level. I came up with 264 feet, when I tracked the time it took for the armed guards to reach the elevators. I clocked them doing a 15-minute mile (5280 / 15 = 352 feet a minute) and I did the math from there. They cautiously walked through the corridors for roughly 45 seconds (264 feet) and I believe their main security station was close to the staircase that the Merman had to go down. Take a look at the video to get a feel for the building.

Once at the stairs, the Merman had to go down approximately 40 feet of steps (we need this deleted scene). Why did he have to go downstairs? In the beginning of the film, Hadley and Sitterson are walking on the 100 level to get some coffee. You can clearly see they have to go down a staircase to get to their golf cart. Also, during the attack, you will notice the creatures going down stairs to attack their prey as well. I believe the 100 level was where the elevators exited the monsters because during the unicorn attack you see a sign for room 100. I don’t think the unicorn had a chance to go down some stairs so 100 level it is!

After they make the trek downstairs the duo get into a golf cart and go to the control office. I’m wagering the trip had to be at least 300 feet to warrant taking a golf cart. Since these two guys seem bored with their job and caught in a routine I think they take the cart everywhere out of boredom. Throw in an added 20 feet to get into the large control center and the total jumps up to 320 feet.

They have a sweet setup.

The Merman had to travel 624 feet (264 + 40 + 300 + 20) in order to kill Hadley and create a whole lot of irony. Since Mr. Merman could only move 41.25 feet every minute the trip took a total of at least 15.127 minutes (+/- 30 seconds.). I initially thought the scene played out in real time but after destroying my soul with multiple brutal viewings I started REALLY watching the video screens that showed the villains corralling various workers and killing them in Saw-esque fashion.

I am 93.456% certain that 15 minutes was the minimum amount of time needed to make the deadly trip. The Merman didn’t waste time killing anybody else and his 15-minute crawl left plenty of time for professional/mythical killers to horribly kill people via fire, chains, and gross surgery.
