The 10 Best 2016 Films That You Can Stream on Netflix or Amazon Prime

December 29, 2016

Hello all. Mark here.

The universe is currently being flooded by “best of” lists that feature a plethora of great movies. You’ve decided to watch the majority of them, but you have no idea how you can watch Moonlight, The Handmaiden and Everybody Wants Some!! on the same day. If you hunted down all these films and scoured the local cinemas you’d end up spending a lot of money and covering many miles to watch them. So, I’ve decided to search through the streaming sites and put together a list of fantastic 2016 films that can watch and potentially add to your “best of” list.

sing-street-band

Watch Sing Street like you stole it….Check out the movie and you will understand.

Here are the 10 best 2016 films that you can currently stream (In no particular order).

Sing Street – Netflix

Sing Street is pure bliss. Director John Carney (Once, Begin Again) has created another fantastic musical yarn that will put a smile on your face. If you are into good music, likable characters and more good music it doesn’t get any better than Sing Street.

.

Love & Friendship – Amazon Prime

Love & Friendship is a breath of fresh costume drama/comedy air. Jane Austen’s unpublished novella is in perfect hands with director Whit Stillman and the two seem beautifully suited for each other. Kate Beckinsale is a delight, and I hope she is remembered come awards time. She is perfection in the film and it bums me out that she had been stuck in the Underworld world so long.

.

The Lobster – Amazon Prime

The Lobster is weird, violent and hilarious. It might be one the best comedies released in years and I really hope that Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz are remembered come awards time. If you are into movies that use toasters as evil punishment devices you will love every second of The Lobster.

.

Green Room – Amazon Prime

Green Room is the best thriller of 2016  and it proves that director Jeremy Saulnier (Blue Ruin) is an amazing director. I’ve watched Green Room three times now and it just keeps getting better and better.  It is a layered and brutal thriller that is heavy on character and ugly violence.

.

The Wailing – Netflix

The Wailing is horror perfected. It is an immersive experience that hurts the soul and proves horror movies can be great films. Director Na Hong-jin has made an absolute classic that will be a staple of the genre for years to come. You need to watch The Wailing because it is the best horror film of 2016 and you probably already have Netflix so it will be free. Also, watching it at home gives you the luxury of being able to pause it when things get too intense.

.

Captain America: Civil War – Netflix

Captain America: Civil War is a perfect popcorn film that features fun fights, giant Ants and the best villainous moment of 2016 (no spoilers). If you are looking for a massive blockbuster that delivers the goods you need to watch it. Also, if you are into powerful beings who wear fitted sweaters you will love Civil War.

.

Zootopia – Netflix

Zootopia took over the world with massive box office numbers and near universal praise. I love how it successfully built a new world, introduced a lot of new characters (Flash the Sloth!) and features an intriguing mystery. Zootopia is an absolute delight that proves we are in an animated renaissance.

.

The Witch – Amazon Prime

The Witch is the rare horror film that has been discussed come awards time. It is genuinely good (think the 1970s horror heyday) and features an authenticity rarely seen in horror.  It is crazy tense and filled with imagery you will never forget (think baby goo). I loved how memorable and original The Witch is, and I think the fresh setting and insane moments will eventually become iconic. It is a tough watch but if you like layered horror you should check out The Witch.

.

Into the Inferno – Netflix

Werner Herzog + Volcanoes = Awesome. If you are into documentaries and lava you will love Into the Inferno. I’ve always said that Herzog is my spirit animal and I love every second of his sage narration and bonkers worldviews. Watch Into the Inferno, then check out all of his other documentaries because they are awesome. Watch the trailer!

.

Hush – Netflix

You need to watch Hush. It is a fantastic cat-and-mouse thriller that features great performances from John Gallagher Jr. and Kate Siegel. What I love about Hush is how it creates a terrifying new killer that isn’t explained away via expository dialogue. It you are into mirco-budgeted horror films that hit above their weight you will really enjoy Hush and all its awesomeness.

Honorable mentions!

  1. Morris From America – Amazon Prime
  2. Elvis & Nixon – Amazon Prime
  3. Jungle Book – Netflix

The 10 Best Horror Films of 2016

December 26, 2016

2016 was a fantastic year for horror. We’ve been lucky enough to have a lot of films that defied genre expectations and gave the world some amazing new villains (Don’t Breathe) and stories (Train to Busan). The following movies are all incredibly different and offer something awesome for horror lovers.

10. The Neon Demon

Do you like Nicolas Winding Refn films that aren’t Drive? If you answered “yes,” then you will really appreciate The Neon Demon. It is empty, dirty, violent, and beautiful to look at. It won’t leave you feeling fulfilled, but it is gloriously original and features insane moments that will make you squirm.

9. Don’t Breathe

Don’t Breathe is a blue-collar film that features realistic scares and an iconic villain. The camerawork is top-notch and whenever violence breaks out you feel the pain. I love that it pulled in huge box office numbers because this is a film that deserves to be watched. It gives the audience what they want (moments of not breathing) and features likable characters and almost too much suspense (I’m a wimp).

8. The Witch

The Witch is the rare horror film that is beloved by critics and horror lovers. It is crazy tense and filled with imagery you will never forget (think baby goo). I loved how memorable and original The Witch was and I think the fresh setting and insane moments will eventually become iconic.

7. 10 Cloverfield Lane

10 Cloverfield Lane is a terrifying chamber thriller that features career best performances from Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Goodman. It manages to do a lot with little and proves horror films don’t need masked killers or insane violence to be tense. I really hope that John Goodman is nominated for an Academy Award because he is perfect in the movie.

6. Green Room

Green Room proves that director Jeremy Saulnier (Blue Ruin) is an amazing director. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time and I love how Saulnier makes violence look so ugly and realistic. Nothing is glorified and you will find yourself incredibly nervous for the trapped punk band. Also, Patrick Stewart is awesome as the Neo-Nazi leader because he looks like your nice uncle but he would kill you without a thought. Please watch Green Room.

5. The Invitation

The Invitation tells the story of a dinner party gone awry. It is patient, chilling and features the best horror ending of 2016. Director Karyn Kusama does a great job building to an unforgettable climax that will make your head explode (not really). You need to watch The Invitation because it is unexpected, tense, chilling, and features some great beards.

4. The Conjuring 2

Director James Wan is the king of mainstream horror and he has found a way to appeal to both critics and audiences. What I like about The Conjuring 2 is how it features heroes instead of victims. The Warrens (Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga) are awesome ghostbusters who put themselves in danger to save others. I love the Warren’s unselfishness and willingness to dive headlong into danger. Movies don’t get anymore stressful than The Conjuring 2.

3. Hush

You need to watch Hush. It is a fantastic cat-and-mouse thriller that features great performances from John Gallagher Jr. and Kate Siegel. What I love about Hush is how it creates a terrifying new killer that isn’t explained away via expository dialogue. An added bonus is Stephen King loves it!

Stephen King

@StephenKing

How good is HUSH? Up there with HALLOWEEN and–even more–WAIT UNTIL DARK. White knuckle time. On Netflix.

2. Train to Busan

Train to Busan is a beautifully audacious horror movie. I love how it doesn’t spare your feelings and features a new spin on the zombie genre. It feels like Snowpiercer met 28 Days Later and spawned a neat World War Z type film. If you are wanting to watch an original zombie film I totally recommend you check out Train to Busan.

1. The Wailing

The Wailing is horror perfected. It is an immersive experience that hurts the soul and proves horror movies can be great films. Director Na Hong-jin has made an absolute classic that will be a staple of the genre for years to come. You need to watch The Wailing because it is the best horror film of 2016.

The MFF podcast is back and we are talking about Mister Doctor (AKA Doctor Strange). Marvel has done it again, and I appreciate that they’ve successfully made a movie about a jerky doctor who becomes a slightly less jerky magician. I absolutely love the movie and I think it might be my second favorite Marvel film behind Iron Man. Benedict Cumberbatch owns every second that he is onscreen and I wish Tilda Swinton trained me to battle an angry Mads Mikkelsen. We had a great time recording the pod and discussing whether Beyonce Wong or Adele Wong is the better name.

Who am I to judge?

As always we answer random questions and discuss whether or not Dr. Strange uses magic to shave.  It is a magical 85-minutes that will change your perception of reality (probably not) and hopefully motivate you to move to Nepal in search of becoming Benedict Cumberbatch.

The MFF podcast is back and we are talking about cinematic kitchen fights! The cinematic kitchen fight is an underutilized aspect of filmmaking. When done right the kitchen fight can be a thing of beauty because there are plenty of props, weapons and burning stoves in which to inflict pain. There are endless possibilities to kitchen warfare and I love how items like skillets can become deadly in the hands of assassins. In this podcast you will hear about a plethora of brawls that involves lettuce, apples and really cool fight stances.

Please watch The Raid movies.

As always we answer random questions and discuss whether or not JCVD can pull off spin kicks in tiny kitchens.  It is an entertaining 90-minutes that will change your perception of kitchens and hopefully motivate you to watch and embrace some bonkers fights.

December 15, 2016

The Random Awards are back and they are celebrating the best of 2016! I love randomness (just listen to the mid-year random awards pod) and because of this I put deep thought into dumb awards. The films of 2016 have given me ample random material and I hope  you enjoy the inane and cheeky awards. If you are interested make sure to check out the 10 best mustaches of 2016 too!

Sit back, relax and enjoy the 2016 Mid-Year Random Awards!

Best Movie of the Year Award

Everybody Wants Some!! is the hands down best movie of 2016. It is rewatchable,  likable and beautifully directed by Richard Linklater.

Everybody wants some cast

.

Best Blue Person Touching a Television and Learning Everything Award

If you are an ancient being who needs to play catch up on thousands of years of “learning” just go ahead and touch a television and tell people you are “learning.” X-Men: Apocalypse is really bad.

.

Best Looking at Computers Award

Jason Bourne is not a good movie. However, Alicia Vikander’s looking at computer work is stellar. She really nails looking at stuff that isn’t there and acting like stuff is there.

.

Best Volkswagen Backseating Award

Bucky and Sam need their own movie. I love their interactions in Captain America: Civil War.

.

Best Carhartt Jackets Award

Manchester by the Sea is the best film of 2016 (Everybody Wants Some!! is the best movie) and it features the best Carhartt jackets of the year. I’m pretty sure somebody from the costume department wore the jacket around for a month and wrestled random folks to get the jackets looking right.  I hope Casey Affleck wins an Oscar because the dude is awesome.

Best Grumpy Waitress Award

Hell or High Water features the grumpiest/most amazing waitress ever. Don’t even try to order something than potatoes and steak around her.

.

Best Breathing in a Movie About Not Breathing Award

The breathing in Don’t Breathe is pretty great. I really believed the actors didn’t want to breathe, but had to breathe (because you have to). Their kinda breathing was excellent, and I applaud them for their attempts at not breathing and failing at it.

Dont-Breathe

.

Best Mustache That Would Make Tom Selleck Jealous Award

Aaron Eckhart’s mustache in Sully is next level awesome. It is easily the best mustache of 2016.

.

Best M&M Stealing Award

I wish more people watched Elvis & Nixon. Michael Shannon and Kevin Spacey are in fine form and they worked wonderfully together. My favorite moment of the film involves Elvis stealing Nixon’s M&Ms. It is a gangster move and proves Elvis didn’t care about M&M theft laws.

.

Best Cannibalism Award

Are you a model? Is there a model who is better than you? Don’t eat them. The Neon Demon is a weird movie.

Craig Robinson is really good in Morris From America. I just hope Morris From America 2 isn’t Hot Tub Time Machine 2.

Best Sock Featured in a Horror Film Award

Lights Out is a nice little horror film. I really like the “relationship sock” moment because it felt real and created likable characters who don’t end up as horror fodder.

Rachel Weisz’s narration in The Lobster might be the greatest thing ever in the history of the world (total hyperbole…but not really). The Lobster is brutal, brilliant, bleak and bloody hilarious.

.

Best Painting of an Evil Nun Award

Have you ever dreamt of an evil nun, then woke up and painted a perfect portrayal of that evil nun? Patrick Wilson did in The Conjuring 2.

Best Farting Corpse Jet Ski Award

The farting corpse jet ski scene in Swiss Army Man might be the weirdest cinematic moment of 2016. I love that fact, but I dislike that it makes jet skis cool.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople is a joyous blast of sadness and humor. You can’t pin the film down into any genre and I like how it plays how unexpectedly and violently. You will love this song.

.

Best Threatening to Have Somebody Whipped Award

Kate Beckinsale is awesome in Love & Friendship. She nails the Jane Austen dialogue and you can tell she loves delivering every line. I feel bad for the guy she threatens in this scene though.

.

Best Music Video For a Band That Was Created to Impress a Girl Award

Sing Street is an ode to love, music and 1980s Ireland. Director John Carney (Once, Begin Again) has hit another homerun.

Best Annoyed Ralph Fiennes Award

Hail, Caesar! is the most underrated film of 2016 and the clip below features one of my favorite scenes of the year. Ralph Fiennes is the best.

Best Autograph Award

You gotta watch Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping to understand what this award is about. The scene is too NSFW for this post.

.

Best Perfect Fitting Outfits That Are Found During a Night of Chaos Award

Nerve is the most pleasant surprise of 2016 and it features outfits that are way too tailored to be found on the fly. Did the production designers go to the “Tom Cruise School of Perfect Fitting Clothes” school?

Best Side-Eye Award

Colin Farrell’s side-eye work in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is top-notch. The dude has mastered the art of looking annoyed at people while not exactly looking at them.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople: Ricky Baker is the Best

December 6, 2016

hunt-for-the-wilderpeople-movie-poster

.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople is an absolute delight. Directed by Taika Waititi (Boy, What We Do in the Shadows) the film is equal parts hilarious, heartfelt and bleak. There is a welcome dose of melancholy and humor that combine to make one of the most original films of 2016. It was a massive hit in New Zealand and Waititi has moved to the uber-green Marvel pastures to direct Thor: Ragnarok. After Boy, What We Do in the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople I think Taika is one of the most exciting directors working today.

taiakia-thor

Chris Hemsworth’s Instagram account is great by the way.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople revolves around a troubled youth named Ricky Baker (Julian Dennison) moving to the New Zealand bush to live with Bella (Rima Te Wiata) and Hec (Sam Neill). Ricky has bounced around the New Zealand childcare system and keeps getting kicked out of his foster homes. So, the last resort is moving him to the country to live with the nice Bella and salty Hec. Ricky slowly begins to settle in, but due to some really sad circumstances he ends up lost in the wilderness with the grumpy Hec. The authorities fear Ricky was kidnapped, so a massive manhunt ensues and they are chased nonstop by an unhinged childcare authority named Paula (Rachel House). During the manhunt we are introduced to several oddball characters, grumpy hunters and a massive wild boar.

I really like how the movie is filled with genuine surprises and an insane amount of heart. Julian Dennison is an absolute delight and I love his reactions, dancing and need for something constant. My favorite scene revolves around Bella coming up with the best birthday song ever. It is such a nice moment and perfect encapsulates the film.

.

I’d love to say more about Hunt for the Wilderpeople but I don’t want to spoil anything. There are so many surprises and neat moments that normally don’t happen in average coming of age films. I can’t wait to watch it again and I bet I will keep picking up on fantastic character beats that I missed the first time around.

Watch Hunt for the Wilderpeople!

Yoga Yosers: Another Weird Trip to the Great North

December 5, 2016

yoga-hosers-posters

.

Yoga Hosers is a strange little film that features yoga, hosers and murderous sauages. It is the second chapter of Kevin Smith’s Great North trilogy (Tusk came first) and it proves there are a lot of weird antics happening in Smith’s version on Canada. I am a longtime Kevin Smith fan and will continue to read his books, listen to his podcasts and watch his increasingly stoned-out films long after they’ve stopped making sense. Yoga Hosers is far from Clerks and Chasing Amy but it has a weird charm because it is only meant for Kevin Smith fans. I know as a fan I should expect more from a guy who is capable of better work, but I appreciate that he has completely given up on regaining old form and makes low-budget films he is passionate about. You can sense that Smith loved every second of directing Yoga Yosers, and didn’t forsee the critical derision the film would receive.

.

Yoga Hosers centers around the further adventures of the two cell phone addicted convenience store employees featured in Tusk. Colleen (Lily-Rose Depp) and Colleen (Harley Quinn Smith) spend their days being pithy, playing music, annoying their high school teachers and practicing yoga with their teacher Yogi Bayer (Justin Long). A big problem arises when they are forced to work on a Friday night and can’t make a senior party they were invited too. Their bad night gets worse when they are attacked by Canadian Satanists AND killer Nazi bratwursts (Bratzis) in the confines of the already annoying convenience store (they weren’t even supposed to be there!!). After the deadly battle they are arrested for killing the Satanists and their only salvation comes in the form of detective Guy Lapointe (Johnny Depp). From there it gets weirder and we are treated to bad accents, more Bratzis and “eh” jokes.

yoga-hosers-depp

The reason I can’t outright dismiss Yoga Hosers is because of the all-in performances. I may be the only person on the planet who appreciates the weirdness of Johnny Depp’s heavily accented Guy Lapointe (he was in Tusk). Depp plays it fast and loose and seems like he really enjoys acting alongside his daughter Lily. Lily-Rose Depp and Harley Quinn Smith are likable as well, and I wish they were given Clerks/Mallrats dialogue instead of the rushed self-satisfied dialogue Smith has been churning out. Smith admitted that he made the film for tweens and he had this to say at the Fantasia Film Festival:

What you are about to see is what I intended to be a kids movie. I made it for tween girls. I never made a kids movie in my life, this is the movie I wanted to see when I was a 12-year-old girl.

So, Smith has written/directed/produced a movie that is meant for tween girls and focuses on murderous Nazi sauages. Once you are able to accept that this is a weird little thing, I think you might embrace it. Smith has always been incredibly earnest on his podcast, and this film is a transparent little thing that he made so he could work with his daughter. Being a fan of Kevin Smith means accepting the good, the bad and Yoga Yosers. I might be a glutton for punishment but I hope he finishes his trilogy and makes Moose Jaws.

If you are a Kevin Smith fan I totally recommend Yoga Yosers.

The Five Step Guide to Making a Great Standalone Obi-Wan Kenobi Film

November 30, 2016

I really want to see an Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone Star Wars film. Ewan Mcgregor is one of my favorite actors and I think there would be a lot of support for a mid-budgeted Obi-Wan movie that featured his adventures on Tatooine. News came out recently that he might be featured in Episode VIII, but these are all rumors and I have no idea what his role will be. I know Disney has a master plan for the Star Wars universe, but in a Hail Mary effort to get the ball rolling on an eventual standalone film I’ve decided to come up with a five step guide to making a great Obi-Wan film.

The following post covers five ideas that might create a great Obi-Wan standalone film!

1. Hire Gareth Evans (The Raid: Redemption, The Raid 2) to Direct

The reason Disney needs Gareth Evans is because he can keep the focus on character and action. What I love about Gareth Evans is how he is able to direct brilliant action set pieces and create memorable characters. I can name pretty much all the characters (think Bubba naming shrimp in Forrest Gump) in The Raid: Redemption and The Raid 2 and that is rare for action movies featuring an ensemble cast. If Evans did decide to direct he would bring in his hardcore fans and surely create something epic for Obi-Wan.

Gareth Evans is the best.
Gareth Evans is the best.

I also think Jeff Nichols (Mud, Take Shelter) or Jeremy Saulnier (Green Room, Blue Ruin) would be great options too.

2. Keep the Budget Around $100 million

There is no need to make the film for over $100 million. Keep the locations sparse and focus on a simple chase film that doesn’t reach the excess of Mad Max: Fury Road or the size of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Evans directed The Raid 2 for $4.5 million dollars and managed to create a beautiful epic that looked more expensive than most CGI-fests. I say give him $100 million and let his action choreographers Iko Uwais and Yayan Ruhian create something special. Check out this amazing fight and you will want to see more.

3. Keep the Plot Simple

Here is the plot: Some Tatooine bounty hunters figure out Luke Skywalker’s location and they are on the run to get the news out. However, since they are in the middle of nowhere their communication systems are down. Thus, they are headed to the nearest establishment to relay the message. This would allow for an urgent narrative that focuses on a sole plot point. I love films like Alien, Predator and It Follows because they stick to a simple idea and build the characters and action from there. The Obi-Wan film could be awesomely simple, yet rich with cool characters and merchandising.

Thanks to reddit for starting the discussion.

A chase movie would be great!

4. Open up the Tatooine World

Who wouldn’t love to see more of the characters established in A New Hope? I’d love to see some more of the Jawas, Sand People and various bounty hunters. We know the world, so it would be easy to jump into the narrative without too much explanation. There is a lot to explore on Tatooine and I know people want to see the world expanded (check out the recent comics). Also, think about how much merchandise they could sell via rehashing old characters and introducing new creatures.

More of this!

5. Don’t Leave It Open Ended

Let the movie have a beginning, middle and end. Don’t plan on eight sequels and instead bring the movie to a neat conclusion. There can be room to grow, but I’ve always felt like movies get in trouble when they plan too far in advance. Test the water with a clean 90-minute film and if audiences like it there will be another. What I love about the Obi-Wan world is that there are a lot of unknowns to his exile and those lost years are ripe for awesome individual stories.

What do you think about these five steps? Who would you like to see direct? Would you like to see an Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone film?

Let me know in the comments.
